Welcome!
My name is Hayden Coombs and I’m a husband, father, educator, and self-proclaimed athlete. I work hard, love to laugh, and place great value in my relationships. This website was initially developed as a blog, transformed into an online portfolio, but now serves as a hub for my many interests and passion projects.
I am a professor at Southern Utah University, where I teach sports administration and sport management courses in the communication department. From 2016-2022, I also oversaw and developed the student-produced media outlets, the University Journal and SUUNews.net.
I earned a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Sport & Athletic Management from Northcentral University in 2022. I also hold a Master of Arts in Professional Communication from Southern Utah University, and a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Brigham Young University-Idaho. My academic background and interests are mostly in communication studies, sport, journalism, media studies, and international education.
Professionally, I spent the early part of my career in sports journalism. After the birth of my first child, I had a career change moved into collegiate athletic administration, before realizing my passion was teaching, rather than administration.
I have extensive experience in publishing, having over 10 years of experience in newspaper, magazine, and academic journal publishing. I am the director of a nonprofit organization that specializes in open-access academic journals, including the Utah Journal of Communication, the Sport Administration & Management Annual, and the Journal of Student Research in the Social Sciences.
