- Describe a situation when you felt that your message was not heard and what listening barriers may have caused this.
- What did you do to ensure that your message was received?
On Tuesday, Oct. 12, we had a big snow storm here in southern Utah. I usually get to work at about 7-7:30 a.m., but the roads were so bad that I didn’t make it in until after 8. I have my technical writing class at 10, so I started preparing my lesson. As I was working on my lesson, I started getting texts from some of my students saying they were having a hard time getting out of their parking lots, sliding on the road, etc. For many of my students who are not from this area, this was the first time they had to drive in the snow. At about this time, all the faculty also got an email from our university president encouraging us to hold class online if we could and to encourage our students to stay off the road until the roads had been plowed.
I emailed my class immediately, informing them that we would hold class remotely. I recorded my lecture and posted it on our class page, uploaded their assignments, and set up a Zoom room in case anyone had any questions.
After sending the email, I grew concerned that some students would miss my email, so I sent them a message through the school’s messaging system, and texted all of the students whose numbers I had saved in my phone. I also asked them to text any of their classmates to make sure they knew that we wouldn’t be meeting face-to-face that day.
In the end, only one student didn’t get my messages in time. I went to our classroom to see if anyone showed up, and it was just this student, so to make it up to him, we went to the school’s dining area and I took him to breakfast.
The primary listening barrier I was concerned with were students not receiving my email and messages before they left their apartments. This barrier was caused by their preoccupation with getting to school on time, technological issues, and timing, as I sent the message only about an hour before our class was supposed to start. To ensure messages were received, I exhausted all of my options by sending them messages with every mediated method of communication I had available to me.
